Dan Rederick
Volin, South Dakota

In the spring of 2009, Austin Stevens, who owns Kicker’s Archery, asked if I was interested in a moose hunt in Ontario Canada.  I thought it might be fun.  We planned on going and set the hunt up with Franklin of Franklins of Stone Lake in Ontario.  When we arrived at Stone Lake, our guide Franklin was ready to go and we went out to look for sign. We immediately found the sign we were looking for and decided to come back and hunt the following morning.
After a restless nights sleep, Franklin woke us up to tell us the conditions were just not right to hunt the area and that we should so go back to sleep. That afternoon the winds were still wrong and as bad as we hated to, we decided it would be better to wait until the following morning. We killed the empty time by checking bear baits with Franklin but we were really looking forward to starting the hunt.

Unfortunately, there was still no change in the weather conditions on the second morning. The winds were wrong and we spent another afternoon checking and baiting for bear.

Finally, on the third morning Franklin woke Austin and I and said “get ready it’s perfect”.  We hurried and loaded equipment into his boat and up the lake we went.  When we got to the bay, Franklin placed two cow decoys in the water. With Austin filming,  I set up and we were ready for the hunt.  Franklin floated out into the lake and began calling and splashing in the water imitating a cow moose.

I really wasn’t sure this was going to work but within moments we heard the bull.  Franklin didn’t over call and made the bull come to us.  The bull sounded like a bulldozer coming through the brush and Austin and I got ready for a shot.

With a deep growl the bull came into view and stopped momentarily then started towards the water. He presented me with a 15-yard shot. I drew back my Dream Season PSE bow and let the Carbon Force arrow fly.  The bull lunged forward two steps and stopped. He didn’t know what had happened.  The shot was a complete pass through and within 20 seconds the bull was done.  I couldn’t believe it. Our patience had paid off.  We all gave each other a high five.  This was an unbelievable hunt and I would love to do it again.

The bull measured 61 inches wide and after having it measured was the #2 SCI bull in Eastern Canada territory.

Thanks to PSE for their great products, Austin Stevens with Kicker’s Archery for the filming and Franklin with Franklins on Stone Lake in Ontario, Canada for the guide services.
